Johnson

Johnson writes about a conversation he has with a black woman about how the want to teach a class together about race and gender. He says he wants to say “Can we talk about this and us?” but he can’t. He writes later “The reality of her having to deal with racism and sexism every day is connected to the reality that I don’t… All of that sits in the middle of the table like the proverbial elephant that everyone pretends not to notice” (9). That statement is the thesis of his argument. The problem isn’t the differences we have, but not talking about them. We pretend they don’t really exist so we don’t have to deal with it, or be trouble by it. This is a problem because it fuels SCWAAMP. If we all pretend that being straight is the best way to be, we will all act straight. This crushes anyone who straight, or white, or any of the other SCWAAMP things.
